7 Tips to Practice during Pregnancy to Prevent Miscarriage

Miscarriage is one of the most heartbreaking incidents for a pregnant woman to experience during her pregnancy. It leaves a psychological and emotional damage. It is important to learn what causes a miscarriage and how to prevent it.

Miscarriages can happen in any trimester of pregnancy. However, miscarriages during the first trimester are more common. Sometimes women don’t know they are pregnant, and they carry on with their regular lifestyle or maybe are undergoing stress, excessive traveling, strenuous physical activity which might also lead to miscarriage.

Genetic abnormalities in fetus are the most common cause of miscarriage, however this is something that one cannot control or prevent. Many women with a history of previous miscarriage should be particularly aware of this.

Cervical incompetence or cervical insufficiency happens when a woman’s cervix is weak, and begins dilating and opening too early in the pregnancy. This leads to a miscarriage. It is important to detect premature dilation in time as cervical incompetence can result in preterm birth or pregnancy loss.

Apart from these, there are other reasons leading to miscarriage which can be known and prevented to avoid at a risk of undergoing miscarriage. It is very important for would-be mothers to know what their bodies need and how to provide it.

Maintaining a good lifestyle and a balanced diet is the best way to prevent miscarriage. Here, there are some tips and basic pointers to practice during pregnancy to avoid miscarriage –

1.Preconception Counseling – Consult your doctor before conceiving and planning pregnancy. Your gynecologist will evaluate your medical history, lifestyle make sure you are properly vaccinated for disorders like Rubella. Based on this evaluation, doctor will let you know if you are physically prepared and fit for pregnancy.

2. Make sure you take your Iron, folic acid and other supplements as recommended by your Gynecologist.

3. DO NOT self-medicate.

4. While some women might love their daily dose of tea and coffee, these caffeinated beverages should be consumed within limits.

5. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be completely avoided during pregnancy. While some moms-to-be would like to occasionally sip in some alcohol, it is not good for the fetus. The concept of “one glass won’t hurt”, hurts.

6. Hormonal imbalance can cause miscarriage, hence do not miss your scheduled visits to your gynecologist so that your health is continuously monitored.

7. Believe it or not, reducing stress reduces the chances of miscarriages. While reducing physical stress is important, reducing mental stress is also very important. Mental stress affects the growth of baby. This is the reason our elders always said to think positive and be happy during pregnancy.
